8 Applications Of Synchronous Motor

Motors and generators have become a common thing in all areas like industries, power stations as well as for domestic needs. With the rising demand for electrical-efficient and less power consuming devices, the new inventions of electrical devices can be seen. The basic calculating factor for motors is the power factor. And for different areas of work the power factor should be maintained at unity. And to maintain power factor at unity, different methods are used and synchronous motors are one among them.
Synchronous motor is a kind of A.C motor which is at steady state and the rotation of the shaft is in sync with electric current applied.
Following are some of the applications of synchronous motors:

●    These motors don’t have any load connected to it’s shaft. Thus it can be used for power factor improvement. And due to its capacity to operate at any electric power factor, it is used in the power systems where static capacitors are expensive.

●    The static motors can be used where operating speed is less for example, around 500 rpm but where high power is required. Since the cost of induction motor is high although can be used for 35kW to 2500kW, in these situations a synchronous motor can be easily used at an affordable price.

●    The application of synchronous motors can also be found in making robot actuators, ball mills, record player turntables etc.

●    When used in a high power and big industries, these motors perform two important functions, ie, converting A.C energy into mechanical energy efficiently as well as for power factor correction.

●    They are also used to regulate the voltage at the end of transmission lines.

●    Synchronous motors are also used in paper and textile industries to get a wide range of speed with variable frequency drive systems.

●    Synchronous motor is also used where high power at low speed is expected such as rolling mills, chippers, mixers and pumps.

●    It is used for loads where constant speeds are expected. For example, these are used in fans, blowers, and compressors.

Precise speed regulation makes synchronous motor the best choice for different industrial purposes such as the generators. The use of synchronous motors reduces the power utility and thus increases the efficiency as well as the revenues for industries.
